PULLETS

You may wonder what a “pullet” is.

Chickens are born “chicks” and when they grow up they’re “hens” (or roosters), but in between they are “pullets”. Chickens grow up fast with a chicken going from in an egg to laying eggs in about 6 months or less. Folks have different thoughts on this but they are pullets from about 3 weeks, when they start exchanging fluff for feathers, to laying their first egg.

Here in Kentucky you can purchase chicks but state law says that unless they’re at least 8 weeks old you must purchase at least six chicks. Taking care of chicks is fun and they’re fluffy and cute! But they are dirty and require extra care. That’s where the Happy Farmer comes in. We take the pain out of raising chicks and get them to a minimum 8 weeks old when they are all feathered out so they don’t need supplemental heat, and are ready to start a new flock or integrate into an existing flock.
